Wareham

Saxon walls still ring the heart of this ancient market town, where the River Piddle winds lazily through water meadows toward Poole Harbour. Wareham wears its 1,200 years with quiet dignity - no tourist crowds here, just proper Dorset charm and some cracking countryside within striking distance.

The town sits perfectly positioned between the Purbeck Hills and the harbour, making it an ideal launching pad for adventures. Head south and you'll find yourself climbing Brenscombe Hill or Emmetts Hill for sweeping views across the Isle of Purbeck. The peaks aren't Himalayan, but they're well worth the trek on a clear day.

Down at The Dorset Cider Farm, you can sample local brews while soaking up the countryside atmosphere. It's a proper working farm, not some sanitised tourist trap. For something completely different, Purbeck Vineyard produces some surprisingly decent English wines - worth a detour if you're feeling adventurous.

Historians will appreciate the Radar Research Memorial and various ancient sites scattered across the landscape, including the atmospheric ruins at Quarry Ruins. The Museum, Fossils & Local Finds tells the area's story through genuine local discoveries rather than flashy displays.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A351 runs straight through from Poole, about 20 minutes by car. Harman's Cross station connects to the preserved Swanage Railway if you fancy arriving in style aboard a steam train.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for provisions or a pub lunch, but far enough out to wake up surrounded by heathland and rolling hills. The surrounding countryside offers endless walking opportunities through places like Wilkswood, while Poole Harbour's waters are just minutes away for sailing or simply watching the world go by.
