Brenscombe Hill

The walk up Brenscombe Hill rewards you with proper views across the Purbeck hills and back towards Wareham - it's the kind of spot locals know but tourists often miss. The climb itself isn't brutal, more of a steady trudge through gorse and heathland, and the summit's bare enough that you get the sense of actually going somewhere rather than just wandering through scrub.

This works best for walkers who like a bit of purpose without needing ropes and crampons. On a clear day it's worth the leg work. Families with half-decent fitness will manage it, though younger kids might grumble on the way up - there's not much shade and the path gets loose underfoot in places. Allow an hour there and back from the nearest car park, maybe longer if you're taking photographs or stopping for a breather.

Situated just outside Wareham, it slots neatly into a Purbeck walking itinerary. The campsite cluster - Woodyhyde, Burnbake, and Norden Farm are all within a couple of miles - makes it an easy option for a morning expedition before heading back for lunch. Weather matters more than most peaks this far south. A grey day and you're just climbing a muddy hill. Catch it in decent light and you've got a proper vantage point. Free to visit, naturally. No visitor facilities at the summit, so bring water and don't expect a cafe.
