Rollington Hill

The walk up Rollington Hill takes about twenty minutes from Wareham and rewards you with proper views across the Purbeck landscape. It's not dramatic - Dorset doesn't do drama in that way - but it's the kind of hill that actually makes sense to climb when you're staying in the area. The summit gives you sight lines toward the heathlands and the distant ridges that make this corner of the county worth visiting.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit anticlimactic if they're expecting something showy, but walkers will appreciate the relative quiet and the fact that you're not joining a queue of tourists. There's no visitor infrastructure up here - no cafe, no gift shop, just grass and air and the occasional breeze that reminds you why you came. The walk itself is straightforward enough for most fitness levels, though it can be muddy after rain.

Going in autumn or early winter gives you the best chance of solitude. Summer weekends, less so. Free to access, obviously - it's a hill. Allow ninety minutes if you're meandering, an hour if you're moving with purpose.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites like Woodyhyde or Burnbake Forest Lodges, this works well as a morning sortie before heading to the coast at Swanage or exploring further into Purbeck. It's the kind of spot that justifies a full day in the area rather than demanding a special trip on its own.
