Emmetts Hill

The walk up Emmetts Hill takes about twenty minutes from Wareham, and honestly, it's worth setting aside an hour if you're not in a mad rush. The summit sits at a modest 136 metres, which means the views across the Purbeck Hills unfold gradually rather than all at once - you earn them without needing fell-walking boots.

What you get at the top is a proper panorama of the Dorset countryside rolling away to the south, with Wareham visible below. On a clear day the sight lines stretch far enough to make the climb feel purposeful. It's not a dramatic peak by any means, but that's rather the point - this is intimate, rolling landscape, not Alpine theatre.

Families with children will find it manageable, though younger legs might grumble on the return descent. History buffs should know there's an Iron Age hillfort up here, though the earthworks are subtle - you'll need to know what you're looking at. Walkers doing the longer Purbeck trails often pass through as part of a bigger day out.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so bring water. The approach is straightforward from Wareham town centre. If you're camped at Woodyhyde just 2.6 miles away, or staying at one of the parks dotted round Swanage and Ulwell, this makes a lovely morning outing before tackling somewhere more demanding later. Best visited outside peak summer weekends when the parking area near the base won't be rammed.
