Tregaron

Saturday market days still define the rhythm here, just as they have for centuries in this small Welsh market town. The cattle farmers descend from the surrounding hills, their Land Rovers caked in Cambrian mud, to trade and gossip in Welsh before heading to Y Talbot for a pint.

Tregaron sits proper in the heart of Wales, surrounded by some of the wildest country you'll find this side of Scotland. Those rolling peaks - Pen-y-garfan, Carn Nant-yr-ast, and Bryn Brawd - form a natural amphitheatre around the town, their grass-covered flanks dotted with sheep and the occasional red kite circling overhead. It's big sky country, the sort where you can see weather systems rolling in from miles away.

The town itself won't detain you long. St David church anchors one end of the square, while a handful of galleries including the Tin Man and Daniel Rowland showcase local artists' takes on this dramatic landscape. But Tregaron's real appeal lies in its position as a gateway to the Cambrian Mountains. Those forests - Allt Tan-caebanal, Allt Glyn Buarth, and Gwyddyl - offer proper hiking with views that stretch to Cardigan Bay on clear days.

Getting here means a drive through spectacular but winding country roads, roughly 45 minutes from Lampeter or an hour from Aberystwyth. The nearest train station is Llanwrtyd Wells, but honestly, you'll want a car to explore properly.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Cambrian Mountains Glamping or Treberfedd Farm makes perfect sense. You're close enough for evening pints in town but positioned to wake up to those magnificent mountain mornings when the mist clings to the valleys.
