Gwyddyl

You'll find yourself surrounded by towering conifers the moment you enter Gwyddyl forest, just outside Tregaron in Ceredigion. It's a proper working woodland rather than a manicured visitor attraction - think dense plantations of spruce and fir that block out most of the sky, creating that cool, dimly-lit atmosphere you either love or find a bit oppressive depending on your mood.

The forest is best suited to walkers and anyone after a quiet woodland ramble away from crowds. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is refreshing given how many Welsh forests have been turned into adventure playgrounds. There are paths through the trees - nothing particularly spectacular or well-signposted, mind you - but good for getting some decent woodland air into your lungs. Allow an hour or so for a casual wander, longer if you're the type to stop and listen to the birds.

If you're camping at Cambrian Mountains Glamping just 5 miles away, or staying at Brynarian Caravan Park slightly further out, Gwyddyl makes a decent morning walk before heading into Tregaron proper for lunch. It won't set your heart racing - there's no dramatic viewpoint or hidden waterfall - but it's honest woodland, free to access, and a genuine break from your holiday routine. Just wear decent shoes; the forest floor gets boggy.
