Swansea

Two dozen surfers paddle out beyond the limestone cliffs as the morning light catches the spray. This isn't Swansea proper - this is the Gower Peninsula, where Wales meets the Atlantic in spectacular fashion.

Mumbles Head dominates the skyline here, with the Lifeboatmen's Memorial standing proud against crashing waves below. The coastline is properly dramatic stuff. Upper Blackhole Cliff offers views that stretch to Devon on clear days, while Boiler Slab provides a perfect vantage point for watching seals hauling out on the rocks.

Cavers love this stretch of coast. Long Hole Cave and Rockrose Hole draw explorers from across Britain, though both require proper kit and experience. The limestone has been carved into fantastic shapes by millennia of pounding waves.

St Cattwg's Church, tucked into a fold of the hills, feels wonderfully remote despite being just minutes from the M4. The Gower AONB designation means development is kept in check - this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has stayed refreshingly unspoilt.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The M4 runs you almost to the door, with Junction 42 your exit point. Swansea city centre is a 15-minute drive when you need proper shops or a railway connection.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered across the peninsula makes perfect sense.
