Rock pools and donkey rides still define this stretch of Lincolnshire coast, though Skegness has evolved far beyond its Victorian pier origins. The town proper feels refreshingly unpretentious - think traditional fish and chips, penny arcades, and that famous railway poster promising 'So Bracing!' The seafront delivers exactly what it says on the tin: candy floss, Punch and Judy shows, and proper seaside fun that hasn't been sanitised for Instagram.

Beyond the main drag, quieter pleasures await. The Rush Pool and The Moat at Watermeadows offer peaceful walking routes through wetland habitats, while Saint Leonards Church provides a glimpse of the area's medieval past. Sound House and Roundhouse galleries showcase local artists, proving there's cultural life beyond the amusement arcades.

Venture slightly inland and you'll discover genuine countryside. Wolla Bank Pit nature reserve attracts serious birdwatchers, particularly during migration seasons. The flat Lincolnshire landscape might not win beauty contests, but it has an understated charm - endless skies, drainage ditches cutting geometric patterns through farmland, and that particular quality of light you only get near the North Sea.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. Trains run directly from London and most major cities, while the A52 provides straightforward road access. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense - you're close enough for evening strolls along the prom, yet far enough from the crowds to actually get some sleep. Plus, many sites offer direct beach access or short walks to quieter stretches of sand where you can pretend you've discovered your own private piece of coast.
