East Lindsey AONB

The East Lindsey coastline is one of those stretches of Lincolnshire that doesn't shout about itself, which is precisely why it's worth the trip. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty runs south from Skegness and takes in some genuinely wild wetland, saltmarsh and shingle beaches that feel properly remote despite being minutes from the tourist hubbub.

You'll find a mix of habitats here - dunes, reed beds, freshwater pools - that attract serious birdwatchers and casual nature spotters alike. Waders, terns and overwintering wildfowl are the main draw depending on the season. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which after a day at Skegness itself feels like a luxury.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted along the coast - Creekside is barely a mile away, or Cherry Tree Springs if you want a bit more breathing room - this is brilliant for a morning or afternoon walk before heading back for fish and chips. Families with older kids will get more out of it than toddlers; there's no café or facilities, just the landscape and whatever wildlife decides to show up. Allow two to three hours for a proper ramble, though you can do it in less if you're just after a brisk stretch of legs.

Worth fitting in with a park stay, though don't expect manicured gardens or visitor centres. This is real countryside.
