Knutsford

Ancient coaching inns still line this elegant Georgian market town where Elizabeth Gaskell once lived and wrote. Knutsford has kept its genteel character remarkably intact - think wide cobbled streets, independent boutiques, and that proper English town feeling that's getting harder to find.

The Heritage Centre tells the story of Gaskell's Cranford novels, which were inspired by the town itself. You can still see the influences today as you wander King Street and Princess Street. It's a compact place, easily walkable in an afternoon, but there's enough here to keep you busy for a day or two.

Tatton Park's sprawling estate sits on the doorstep - one of the National Trust's finest properties with its mansion, gardens, and deer park. The Georgian architecture alone is worth the trip. Beyond that, you've got several peaceful lakes for walking: Tatton Mere is the largest, but Melchett Mere and the smaller pools like Fish Pond offer quieter spots for a stroll.

Windmill Wood provides decent hiking if you fancy getting properly muddy. The train connections are excellent - Knutsford station puts you 20 minutes from Manchester and barely an hour from London Euston.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for dinner but can retreat to the countryside when the day trippers head home. Royal Vale Caravan Park and several other sites dot the surrounding farmland, giving you that rural base while keeping the Georgian elegance within easy reach.
