The water sits eerily still most days, reflecting whatever sky Cheshire can muster. Melchett Mere is a proper working landscape rather than a manicured attraction - it's a natural mere (a glacial lake, if you want to be technical) surrounded by farmland and woodland, the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. There's a footpath running round the perimeter, and locals use it for walking and the odd bit of birdwatching. Nothing fancy. No café, no visitor centre, no entrance fee as far as anyone can tell. Just water, reeds, and peace.

Walkers will find it worthwhile if you're in the area near Knutsford, though don't expect dramatic scenery - this is understated North West countryside. A circuit of the mere takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace. Birdwatchers appreciate it more than most; the water attracts wildfowl, particularly in winter months. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on nature.
