Empty caravan parks dot the Holderness coast like abandoned chess pieces. This is the forgotten corner of England, where Hull's urban sprawl meets proper countryside and the North Sea crashes against crumbling cliffs. Not exactly a tourist hotspot, but that's precisely its appeal.

The landscape here feels end-of-the-world dramatic. Fields stretch to the horizon, broken only by ancient churches like All Saints in Rise and St Alban's Church in Withernwick - solid Norman stones that have watched empires rise and fall. These aren't Instagram-famous landmarks, but they're the real deal. Proper history without the gift shops.

Seventeen miles northeast of Hull city centre, this is farming country first and foremost. The A165 cuts straight through, connecting Bridlington to the north with Hull to the south. Villages are sparse, connected by narrow lanes that flood when the weather turns nasty. Which it does. Often.

Staying at one of the local parks makes perfect sense if you want to explore East Yorkshire properly. Burton Constable Holiday Park sits right by the historic hall and arboretum - though don't expect luxury. These are working parks for people who appreciate space over spa treatments. From here, you can reach Hull's museums and marina in half an hour, or head to Hornsea's beaches when the sun occasionally shows its face.

It's not for everyone. The nearest proper pub might be a drive away, and entertainment means long walks across fields where the wind never stops. But if you prefer solitude to crowds, this stretch of Holderness offers something increasingly rare: genuine peace and quiet.
