Trans Pennine Trail & Hornsea Rail Trail

The Trans Pennine Trail stretches right across northern England, and the Hornsea Rail Trail section gives you a proper flat, easy route through East Yorkshire countryside without breaking a sweat. It's an old railway line converted to a cycle and walking path - the sort of thing that sounds dull until you actually get out there and realise you've got hours of uninterrupted pedalling or striding without a hill in sight.

You're following the bones of the old Hornsea to Hull railway, and the trail is dead straight for stretches, lined with trees and open fields. Cyclists will love it because it's genuinely traffic-free and manageable for all abilities. Families with kids on bikes find it brilliant - no dodging cars, no getting yelled at by drivers. Walkers might find the sheer flatness a bit monotonous if you're after drama, but it's exactly what you want if you need a gentle few hours out without worrying about steep bits or scrambling.

It's free, and you can access it from multiple points near Hull. Allow as long as you fancy - it's not a race. The beauty is you can dip in for an hour or make an afternoon of it. Spring and early summer are ideal when the hedgerows are proper lush.

If you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Goxhill Meadows is closest at less than a mile away - this is the obvious spot to get some exercise without straying far. WoodLake and Sea View Country Park are both within easy striking distance too, making it a solid addition to a park-based holiday rather than a standalone destination.
