Six Roman roads converge here, which tells you everything about Hereford's enduring importance as a crossroads. This is proper cattle country - the famous Hereford breed originated in these rolling pastures - and the city still feels refreshingly agricultural despite its cathedral status.

The magnificent Norman cathedral dominates the skyline, housing the medieval Mappa Mundi and chained library. But don't expect Edinburgh-style crowds. Midweek, you'll have the narrow streets largely to yourself, browsing independent shops that actually serve locals rather than tourists.

Venture beyond the ring road and you're into some of England's most underrated countryside. Shobdon Hill offers cracking views across the Welsh borders, while the mysterious Shobdon Arches - remnants of a demolished Norman church - create an almost surreal focal point in open farmland. History buffs will appreciate the WW2 Glider/Tow Pilot Memorial, marking this area's wartime aviation heritage.

Wigmore Castle, a proper ruin rather than a Disney reconstruction, crowns a hill to the north. The walk up through Wapley Hillfort reveals layers of history stretching back millennia. Between these ancient sites, you'll find peaceful spots like Rookery Pool and dense woodlands including Napshaw Coppice - lovely for clearing your head after cathedral visits.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A49 runs north-south through the city, connecting to the M50 for Midlands access. Birmingham's about 90 minutes by car. The countryside parks dotted around places like Pearl Lake and Arrow Bank make sense as bases, giving you proper rural peace while keeping Hereford's restaurants and cathedral within easy reach. You're also well-placed for forays into the Welsh borders or deeper into the Marches.
