Shobdon Hill

The walk up Shobdon Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and it's steep enough to get your heart going but not so brutal that you'll regret it halfway. At the top, you get proper views across the Herefordshire countryside - the sort of panorama that makes you understand why people ramble out here instead of sitting at home. On a clear day, you can pick out the distant shapes of the Welsh hills to the west.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical scramble, so families with reasonably fit kids will manage fine, though the younger ones might grumble on the ascent. Historians will appreciate that this isn't just a random bump in the landscape - there's genuine archaeological interest, though you won't find much interpretation on the ground. You're basically looking at open slopes and distant vistas once you've got your breath back.

Free to visit, obviously - just park sensibly and head up. Allow an hour if you're taking it easy and want to sit about at the top. The best light is usually late afternoon, and summer weekends draw more people than you might expect for somewhere this low-key.

If you're staying at Pearl Lake or Arrow Bank nearby, this makes a decent morning outing before heading into Hereford proper or tackling longer walks in the wider area. It's not a destination in itself, but it's a solid addition to a Herefordshire walking holiday.
