Rolling hills stretch endlessly towards the Welsh border here, where the A465 winds through countryside that feels properly remote despite being just fifteen miles south of Hereford city. This is the Golden Valley - though locals might argue the name's a bit generous on grey winter days.

Longtown Castle dominates the landscape from its hilltop perch, a Norman stronghold that once guarded this strategic border crossing. The ruins are substantial enough to justify the climb. Down in the valley, Dore Abbey stands as one of the finest Cistercian ruins in the Marches, its weathered stones telling tales of medieval power and dissolution.

Walking is the main draw. Hatterrall Hill offers cracking views across three counties on clear days, while Mynydd Ferddin provides a gentler ascent for families. The Parks Nature Reserve gives you a taste of ancient woodland without the slog, and Ewyas Harold Common is lovely for evening strolls when the light's fading.

Church enthusiasts will find plenty to occupy them. Saint Clydog and St Clydawg Church represent different eras of local worship, while Saint John Kemble commemorates a Catholic martyr - heavy stuff in this historically contested borderland.

Reaching this area takes commitment. The nearest train station is Hereford itself, then you're looking at a proper drive through winding lanes. But that's rather the point - this corner of Herefordshire rewards those who make the effort with genuine tranquillity and landscapes that haven't changed much since the Normans arrived.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're ideally placed for exploring both the English countryside and venturing into the Brecon Beacons, which start climbing skyward just across the border.
