Hatterrall Hill

The walk up Hatterrall Hill is properly steep, but the payoff is genuine - you get one of the best views across the Golden Valley from the top. It's an old volcanic ridge that rises above Hay-on-Wye, and on a clear day you can see for miles across Herefordshire and into Wales. The summit itself is windswept and bare, with a trig point marking the 2,038ft peak.

This is walker territory. It's not a casual stroll - allow two to three hours for the round trip from the nearest car park, and the final push gets quite steep. The paths are well-trodden but can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are worth the effort. Families with older kids who enjoy a genuine hill walk will get something from it. Young children will find it tedious.

You'll come up from the north side, climbing through bracken that turns coppery in autumn. The ridge itself is dramatic - it feels properly wild and exposed once you reach the top. In poor visibility it's less impressive, so pick your day. The walk takes you through real countryside, not some manicured tourist route.

If you're staying at one of the local glamping spots like Grove Farm or Offas Dyke Retreat - both just over two miles away - this makes a good morning walk. Hay-on-Wye is close by if you want town time afterwards. It's free, obviously, being a hillside. Not a destination on its own, but absolutely worth adding to a weekend in the area.
