Ewyas Harold Castle

The remains of Ewyas Harold Castle sit on a modest mound just outside the village of Ewyas Harold, roughly fifteen miles south of Hereford. What you're looking at is a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress from around 1087 - basically an earthen mound topped with a wooden (later stone) tower, surrounded by defensive ditches. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper walk around rather than a quick glance from the car park.

The castle itself is largely gone now, but the earthworks are still clear enough to read the defensive logic. The view across the Golden Valley is genuinely worth the short scramble up. This works best for history enthusiasts and walkers who enjoy piecing together what a place once was from the bones left behind. Kids might manage twenty minutes if they're the exploring type, but don't expect to keep younger ones entertained for long.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted - it's farmland with public footpath access - though there's nowhere to park formally and no facilities on site. Allow an hour if you're going to walk the perimeter and actually study the layout. The best time is autumn or spring when the long grass isn't completely overgrown and the light cuts across the mound properly.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Goytree or Grove Farm, it's an easy walk or drive to combine with exploring the Black Mountains. The castle sits in proper marches country, close enough to Offa's Dyke for a longer day out. Go early in the day to avoid farm activity and get decent light.
