Hereford

Cathedral bells ring out across medieval streets where black and white timber frames lean into cobbled lanes like old friends sharing secrets. Hereford feels properly lived-in rather than tourist-polished - the sort of place where locals still pop into independent shops and the covered market buzzes with proper conversation. The magnificent cathedral dominates the city centre, its Norman towers visible from miles around across the Herefordshire countryside.

Wander down to the River Wye and you'll find peaceful riverside walks that locals use for their daily constitutional. The Old Market area retains much of its original character, though it's quieter midweek than it used to be. For a proper breath of fresh air, Bodenham Lakes offers excellent walking and wildlife spotting just outside the city - the sort of place where you might spend a whole afternoon without realising it.

Outside the city limits, the landscape opens up into rolling hills dotted with hop fields and orchards. Hampton Gardens provides lovely formal grounds for a gentle stroll, while the nearby woodlands of Munscroft Coppice and Venn's Wood offer more rugged terrain for serious walkers. The countryside here feels quintessentially English - all green fields and distant church spires.

Getting to Hereford is straightforward enough by train from Birmingham or Cardiff, though the service can be a bit patchy. The A49 runs right past if you're driving. Several holiday parks around the area make decent bases - Kingfisher Meadow Camping & Caravanning Park and Brook House Woods among them - putting you within easy reach of both the city's attractions and the wider Wye Valley. It's the sort of location where you can have a proper city break while still waking up to birdsong.
