Laystone Bridge

A modest stone crossing near Marden, about four miles south of Hereford, Laystone Bridge is one of those quietly important medieval structures that most people drive past without a second glance. It's a listed building - Grade II, if you're into that sort of thing - and dates back several centuries, serving as a proper working bridge rather than some manicured heritage showpiece.

Walkers exploring the Marden area might incorporate it into a longer route. You won't need more than ten or fifteen minutes here unless you're genuinely keen on medieval masonry.

Staying at one of the nearby campsites - Cuckoo's Corner is closest at just over a mile away - gives you a base for exploring this part of the Wye Valley. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's genuine history doing exactly what it was built to do. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
