Harrogate

Those elegant Victorian terraces tell a different story from the usual Yorkshire mill town narrative. Harrogate built its reputation on water - not the industrial kind, but the mineral springs that drew society types for two centuries. The famous spa town sits pretty in a valley surrounded by the Yorkshire Dales, where rolling hills like High Hill and Great Turmer Hill create a natural amphitheatre.

Beyond the Georgian crescents and manicured gardens, serious walking country begins almost immediately. The Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty wraps around the eastern edges, while peaks like Lippersley Pike and Heligar Pike offer proper fell walking within a few miles. It's not Lake District dramatic, but there's something deeply satisfying about these rounded Yorkshire hills.

The town itself rewards a proper wander. Betty's Tea Rooms still draws queues (tourist trap? Perhaps, but the Fat Rascals are genuinely excellent), while the Turkish Baths offer an authentic slice of Victorian spa culture. Valley Gardens provides a lovely green lung through the centre, connecting the town's two main areas.

Getting here couldn't be easier - direct trains from London King's Cross take under three hours, while Leeds is a mere 40 minutes away. The A1 brings drivers from both directions without much fuss.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Bolton Abbey Estate or Olicana Park gives you the best of both worlds. You're close enough for evening strolls through the town's lit streets, yet positioned perfectly for exploring the Dales proper. Those morning walks up Sugar Hill or Warren Hill become much more appealing when you don't have to drive anywhere first.
