Food lovers know the secret. This market town has quietly become North Yorkshire's unofficial food capital, with monthly food festivals and some of the region's finest independent producers calling it home. The Saturday market dates back to medieval times, but these days you're as likely to find artisan cheese as you are traditional Yorkshire fare.

St. Peter's stands at the heart of the old town, its Norman tower watching over narrow streets that wind between Georgian townhouses and converted coaching inns. Beyond the town centre, rolling chalk downland stretches in every direction - this is proper Wolds country, with ancient woodlands like Castle Wood and Warren Slack Plantation offering miles of footpaths through beech and oak.

The surrounding landscape tells stories spanning millennia. Double Dikes, an Iron Age earthwork, cuts across the hills just outside town, while smaller villages like Weaverthorpe dot the countryside with their own tales - St Andrew's church there is particularly lovely, and the war memorial stands as a poignant reminder of rural sacrifice.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Malton sits right on the A64, making it a straight run from York (20 minutes) or a scenic drive from the coast. The railway station connects directly to York and Scarborough, though having a car opens up the real treasures of the Wolds.

Using a nearby holiday park as your base makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for the farmers' market or evening meal, yet surrounded by some of Yorkshire's most underrated walking country. Woods like Limekiln Wood and Cherry Wood are right on your doorstep, while the coast at Scarborough is barely half an hour away when you fancy a change of scene.
