Double Dikes

Two parallel earthwork ridges cutting across the North Yorkshire landscape near Malton - that's Double Dikes. Iron Age stuff, probably defensive lines or territorial markers, though archaeologists still debate exactly what went on here. The banks are substantial enough that you'll notice them immediately as you walk the site, rising from the ground like something ancient has finally decided to show its hand.

It's a walker's spot more than anything else. You're not getting exhibitions or visitor facilities - just the dikes themselves and the fields around them. Bring decent boots, take your time reading the land, and you'll get more from it than rushing through. History types and Iron Age enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting; families with young kids might struggle to keep their attention for long, though it's decent for a countryside walk regardless.

Free to visit, accessible year-round. Allow 30 minutes to an hour depending on how thorough you want to be. Spring and autumn are probably your best bets - the light catches the earthworks properly, and you won't be fighting summer heat or winter mud.
