Croome Dale Plantation

Walking into Croome Dale Plantation from the Malton side, you're immediately struck by how quiet it gets. The trees close in quickly - a proper mixed woodland that's genuinely peaceful, even on weekends. It's not a manicured forest park with visitor centres and marked trails; this is the real thing, and honestly that's its strength.

The plantation spans enough ground to keep you occupied for a couple of hours if you're keen on woodland walks. Paths wind through deciduous and conifer sections, and in spring the floor comes alive with bluebells. Dogs love it here, families find it manageable without being over-signposted, and if you're after solitude rather than spectacle, you'll find it. The air smells exactly how woodland should smell.

There's no admission charge that we could find - just park and walk. Given how close it sits to Malton, it works perfectly as a half-day break if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby glamping sites like Wolds Walk or Lahtle Wood. You won't need more than two hours here unless you're doing serious hiking boots territory, so it suits a morning ramble before heading into town for lunch.

Not somewhere to write home about, but genuinely worth an hour's visit if you're in the area. It's the kind of place that reminds you forests don't need attractions or viewpoints to be worth your time.
