Heligar Pike

The walk up Heligar Pike is proper Yorkshire fell territory - nothing fancy, just honest moorland with views that stretch for miles if you time it right. It's a modest peak by any standard, but that's rather the point. You get the same sense of height and isolation you'd find on bigger hills without needing to pack for an expedition.

The ascent from Harrogate direction is straightforward enough, taking a couple of hours depending on your pace and where you start from. The landscape is typical gritstone moorland - rough grass, heather when it's flowering, and weathered rock underfoot. Visibility varies wildly; I've had brilliant clear days where you can see across to Wensleydale, and others where the cloud sits low enough to make you question the whole outing.

Walkers will appreciate this more than casual visitors. It's not a scenic drive-past or a quick photo spot - you're committing to proper leg work. Families with confident hill-walkers could manage it, though younger kids might find the moorland repetitive. History buffs won't find much at the summit itself, but the surrounding area has enough industrial archaeology from old quarrying to keep a curious mind occupied.

Breaks Fold Farm Glamping and Camping is handily close at just over 3 miles, making it a logical base for a walking weekend. Several other sites cluster within five miles - Olicana Park, Catgill Farm, Bolton Abbey Estate - giving you flexibility if one's full. Allow a full afternoon for the walk and summit time, or half a day if you're just after a decent climb. Spring and early summer offer the best conditions before the midges arrive in earnest.
