Fishguard

The last invasion of mainland Britain happened right here in 1797, when French forces landed at Carreg Wastad Point. Today, Fishguard feels like a proper working port rather than a tourist trap - ferries to Ireland chug in and out of the lower harbour while the upper town maintains its unhurried Welsh character.

Fishguard Fort stands guard over the bay, a reminder of more turbulent times. The town splits into two distinct areas: Goodwick down by the harbour with its Victorian railway station, and the older settlement perched on the clifftops above. London House Gallery showcases local artists, while Fishguard Herring offers everything from pottery to paintings by Pembrokeshire creatives.

Walking is king here. Sealyham Woods and Esgyrn Wood provide proper countryside rambles, while Waun-castell wood offers quieter trails away from the coast path crowds. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs right through town - you can walk to Newport in about three hours if you're feeling energetic.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A40 brings you in from Haverfordwest, about twenty minutes away by car. Fishguard Harbour station connects directly to Cardiff, though the twice-daily service means planning ahead.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for exploring this corner of Pembrokeshire. You're close enough to pop into town for supplies or a pint, but far enough out to enjoy the rolling countryside that makes this part of Wales so appealing.
