Driffield

Market day brings proper life to this working Yorkshire town, though midweek it settles into a quieter rhythm that locals seem to prefer. Driffield sits squarely in the East Riding countryside, where the Yorkshire Wolds roll down towards the coast in gentle waves of chalk and farmland. The weekly market still draws folk from surrounding villages, just as it has for centuries.

Fifteen minutes east lies the coast at Hornsea, where Hornsea Sands stretches for miles and the Hornsea Museum tells tales of the town's Victorian heyday. The beach can get busy on summer weekends, but walk north or south and you'll find quieter stretches. Hornsea Sailing Club sits at the northern end if you fancy getting on the water.

Inland, the landscape opens up into classic Wolds territory. Leys Hill offers cracking views across the rolling countryside, while Moor Hill Beacon marks an ancient site that's been significant for millennia. The End of Trans-Pennine Trail brings walkers and cyclists through, connecting this corner of Yorkshire to the Pennines far to the west.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A614 runs right through town, linking Hull to the south with the market towns further north. It's proper countryside once you're here, with working farms and quiet villages scattered across the gentle hills.

Staying at one of the nearby parks gives you the best of both worlds. You're close enough to nip into Driffield for supplies or a pub lunch, but far enough out to wake up to proper countryside views. The coast's only a short drive when you fancy sea air, and the Wolds beckon for longer walks.
