Hornsea

Hornsea is a proper seaside town on the Yorkshire coast, about twenty minutes from Driffield, and it's the sort of place where you can spend a afternoon without needing a packed itinerary. The seafront has that faded British holiday feel - a sandy beach, a pier, and enough fish and chip shops to keep you fed for a week. There's a boating lake inland too, which breaks up the coastal monotony if you fancy a quieter spot.

For families, it works well enough. Kids won't complain about the beach, and there's a fairground on the pier if you're desperate to part with cash. The lake is decent for a walk, and you can hire pedalos or rowing boats if the weather's playing ball. History buffs might be interested in the old pottery heritage - Hornsea has connections to the famous British pottery industry - though there's not masses on show these days.

It's not a destination that'll blow your mind, to be honest. The seafront is pleasant but not dramatic, and the town itself is fairly low-key. You'll probably get the best out of it by treating it as a half-day stop rather than planning a full week around it. Admission to the seafront and beach is free, though paying attractions like the pier have their own charges.

If you're camping at Cliff Top Caravan Park or Sea View Country Park nearby, Hornsea makes an easy evening excursion. Combine it with a walk along the promenade and you've got a decent day. Go when the weather's decent - grey skies don't do this place any favours.
