Clitheroe

That brooding Norman keep perched on a limestone crag tells you everything about Clitheroe's character - this is proper Lancashire, where medieval might meets Ribble Valley charm. The castle ruins dominate the skyline, but it's the weekly market that really defines this working town, sprawling across cobbled streets every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with proper northern banter.

Walk up Castle Street and you'll find yourself face-to-face with 900 years of history at Clitheroe Castle. The views from the keep are cracking - rolling hills stretch in every direction, with the distinctive peaks of Tewit Hill and Wooly Hill marking the horizon. Below, the town spreads out in a tangle of Victorian terraces and modern estates, while the River Ribble winds lazily through water meadows.

The Forest of Bowland starts practically on Clitheroe's doorstep. Hell Hole Plantation might sound ominous, but it's actually lovely walking country, and Salem Chapel offers a glimpse into the area's nonconformist past. Gisburne Park Estate, just outside town, provides more formal grounds for a gentle stroll.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A59 runs straight through from Preston and Skipton, while regular buses connect to Blackburn and Manchester. It's about 40 miles northeast of Manchester, making it a proper escape from city life without being completely remote.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for exploring this corner of Lancashire. Clitheroe works brilliantly as your base - close enough to nip into town for supplies or a pub lunch, but surrounded by enough hills and dales to keep you busy for a fortnight. The combination of market town convenience and countryside access is hard to beat.
