Two craft breweries, a massive reservoir, and rolling moorland define this former mining village. Carnkie sits in the heart of Cornwall's engine house country, where the landscape still bears the scars of its industrial past. The granite tower of Bible Christian Chapel stands as a reminder of when this was a thriving community of tin miners.

Stithians Reservoir dominates the local landscape - a proper expanse of water that's brilliant for walks and fishing. The surrounding countryside is quintessentially Cornish: rough moorland punctuated by abandoned mine workings and the occasional farmstead. It's proper wild country, especially when the mist rolls in.

Lacuna Brewing Co and Verdant Brewing Co have both set up shop here, turning this quiet spot into something of a craft beer destination. Both do excellent taproom sessions if you fancy sampling local brews. For families, Raze the Roof offers indoor entertainment when the weather turns, while Tremough House Gardens provides lovely grounds for a wander.

Redruth lies just a few miles north, giving easy access to shops and transport links. The coast is about 20 minutes by car - either the dramatic north shore or the gentler south. From here you're well placed for both Truro and the mining heritage sites scattered across this part of Cornwall.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're centrally positioned for exploring Cornwall's interior, yet close enough to the coast for day trips. The area feels properly Cornish without the tourist crowds that pack the seaside towns in summer.
