The abandoned quarry near Helston has transformed into something unexpectedly beautiful - a deep freshwater lake ringed by steep granite walls that drop straight into the water. It's the sort of place that stops you in your tracks the first time you see it. The contrast between the raw industrial scars and the clear water reflecting the sky is genuinely striking.

Walkers get the most from this one. There's a decent path around the perimeter if you're after a proper leg-stretch, though the gradients can be challenging in places and the rocks underfoot demand attention. It's less "gentle stroll" and more "brisk hike". Photographers will find themselves lingering; the quarry face catches light beautifully in late afternoon. Swimmers come here too, though the water's cold even in summer and getting down to the shoreline requires sure feet.

You're looking at about ninety minutes if you do the full circuit, maybe forty minutes if you just want a look from the top. It's free to visit and open whenever, as far as anyone's told me. There's no car park as such - you'll find a rough pull-in nearby, though parking can get tight on weekends.

It's not a destination in itself, but paired with other walks or beaches in the Helston area, it fills an afternoon properly.
