Croft Plantation

The woodland at Croft Plantation, just outside Helston, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - all towering conifers, mossy ground cover, and that particular smell of damp pine needles that takes you straight back to childhood. It's a proper working forest, not a manicured visitor attraction, which means you get the real thing: quietness, decent shade, and a genuine sense of being away from it all.

Walkers will find this worth an hour or so of their time, especially if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Stay Wild or Tresyjo. The paths wind through the trees with a gentle pace - nothing too demanding, but enough to feel like you've actually moved. Families with younger children might find it bit samey after a while, and there's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation boards, so it's not the type of forest that tells you a story as you go.

Timing-wise, early morning is genuinely lovely here. The light filters through differently, and you'll likely have the paths to yourself. Visit in spring for the green flush, or autumn when the larch turns golden. Summer can feel a touch airless under all that canopy.
