Mountains shoulder in from every direction here, turning what might be just another Highland village into something genuinely dramatic. This tiny settlement sits where Loch Fyne opens up, with the A83 threading through on its way to Campbeltown - making it a proper crossroads for exploring some of Scotland's most rugged terrain.

The peaks tell the real story. Beinn Bheula looms to the north, while The Saddle creates an unmistakable silhouette against changing Highland skies. Serious walkers tackle Clach Bheinn or Beinn Lochain, though even from the roadside the views across to Creag Sgoilte are cracking. It's wild country that rewards effort.

Loch Restil sits tucked into the hills like a secret, while Corran Lochan offers gentler walking for those not keen on scrambling up rocky slopes. The Old Mill provides a glimpse of how remote communities once functioned, when every glen had to be self-sufficient. These days it's all about the scenery and the silence.

Getting here means following the A83 from either Inveraray to the south or Arrochar to the east - both scenic routes that prepare you for what's coming. Inveraray's only fifteen minutes away when you need proper shops or restaurants, but up here it's all about being properly remote.

Basing yourself at one of the nearby parks makes absolute sense. You're positioned perfectly for day trips into the Trossachs or down to Kintyre, while having some of Scotland's most accessible serious hiking literally on your doorstep. The Loch Goil Marine Protected Area is close enough for coastal exploration too, adding variety to mountain days.
