Beinn Lochain

The walk up Beinn Lochain from Cairndow is a proper hillwalking classic - nothing flashy, but genuinely rewarding. You're looking at a 2,506-foot peak that rises sharply from the Rest and Be Thankful pass, so the climb is steep and direct. Most folk reckon on two to three hours up and back, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

Once you crest it, the views punch well above the hill's weight. You get Glen Kinglas laid out below you, the Cowal hills rolling away eastward, and on clearer days, Ben Lomond makes an appearance to the south. The summit itself is rocky and exposed - good for photos but windier than the shelter lower down.

This is walkers' territory, pure and simple. Families with older kids who don't mind a slog will manage fine; the path is clear and well-trodden. Anyone after a gentler stroll will find it grinding. The terrain is rough moorland with exposed rock, so proper boots aren't negotiable.

The nearest base is Cairndow village, and you're well-placed if you're staying at Drimsynie Holiday Village two miles south - that's a family-friendly spot with decent facilities. Argyll Caravan Park and Stucreoch Caravan Park sit about six miles away, both solid options if you're plotting a week of West Highland walking.

Go in May to September when the weather's most forgiving. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the hill itself - bring water and weather-appropriate kit. Free to walk, obviously.
