Burry Port

Four harbours tell the tale of this former coal port's industrial past - West Harbour, East Dock and Outer Harbour still shelter fishing boats and pleasure craft. The railway line that once carried coal wagons from the Gwendraeth Valley runs right to the sea, where Pembrey and Burry Port station marks the end of the line.

Amelia Earhart's name crops up here for good reason. The American aviator touched down on Burry Port's beach in 1928 after her transatlantic flight, becoming the first woman passenger to cross the Atlantic by air. A proper bit of aviation history, marked by the Amelia Earhart historic site.

These days it's the sweeping stretch of Cefn Sidan beach that draws visitors. Eight miles of golden sand backed by Pembrey Forest - easily one of Wales' finest coastal walks. Ffos Las Racecourse brings the crowds for National Hunt racing, while Saint Mary's Church and Our Lady, Star of the Sea speak to the town's maritime heritage.

Several small galleries dot the town centre. The Phil Bennett OBE gallery celebrates the legendary Welsh rugby player, while Yr Arwr (The Hero) and The Spirit of the Race capture local sporting pride. Even the Referee's Whistle gets its own exhibition space.

Llanelli lies 15 minutes east by car, with regular trains connecting both towns to Swansea and Cardiff. The M4 puts you within striking distance of the Gower Peninsula's beaches and the western reaches of Carmarthenshire.

Basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're minutes from that glorious beach, close to the racecourse action, and well-placed for exploring both the industrial heritage of the valleys and the wild coastline stretching towards Tenby.
