King George’s Playing Fields

The playing fields themselves are fairly straightforward - a local sports ground with grassland that's been designated as a nature reserve, just outside Burry Port. It's the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. The appeal here is genuine, if understated: open space where you can actually see what's happening across the Loughor Estuary and the marshland beyond.

This is proper walking country rather than a destination in itself. The wetland habitat attracts birdwatchers reliably, especially in winter when you might spot curlews, dunlins, and the occasional shoveler duck. The paths are manageable and mostly flat, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though it's muddy after rain - wellies are non-negotiable. Allow an hour or so for a decent explore; longer if you've brought binoculars and actual patience.

What makes it worth the trip from any of the nearby caravan parks - Shoreline is practically on your doorstep at just over two miles - is that it slots nicely into a broader coastal walk. You're close enough to Pembrey Country Park to string together a day's outing, and Burry Port itself has a small harbour with cafés for afterwards. It's not flashy or manicured, and that's exactly why it works. Go early morning or dusk if you want to see wildlife rather than dog walkers. Free access, obviously.
