Sacred Groves Coed Rhyal

The ancient woodland of Coed Rhyal sits just inland from Burry Port, a proper slice of old Wales that most visitors driving past never notice. These are the Sacred Groves - a remnant of the old forest that once covered much of Carmarthenshire, now managed as a nature reserve where you can walk among trees that have been here for centuries.

It's not dramatic or showy. There are no visitor centres, no marked trails with interpretive boards, no café selling overpriced sandwiches. What you get instead is quiet. Genuinely quiet. The woodland paths wind through dense growth, and on a still morning you'll hear nothing but birds and your own footsteps on the leaf litter. The canopy is thick enough that even on bright days it feels cool and dimly lit, almost cathedral-like - which probably explains the "sacred" bit.

Walkers will appreciate this more than most. History types too, if they're interested in pre-industrial Wales rather than castle ruins. Kids might manage thirty minutes before restlessness sets in, unless they're the sort who enjoy spotting birds and insects.

The groves sit within easy striking distance of several caravan parks - Shoreline and Pembrey Country Park are barely a couple of miles away - making this a decent half-day excursion during a coastal holiday. Combine it with Pembrey Country Park itself if you want something with more facilities and space for younger children. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no official information readily available. Go early morning if you can. The place feels different when you're alone in it.
