Rope-making traditions run deep through this West Dorset market town, where the ancient art of netmaking still thrives in converted Victorian rope walks. Bridport's steep streets climb from the bustling town centre toward rolling hills that frame the Bride Valley, creating a proper working town feel that's refreshingly authentic compared to some of Dorset's more touristy spots.

The high street buzzes with independent shops and weekly markets, while the surrounding countryside offers excellent walking territory. Watton Hill and Horn Hill provide cracking views across the valley, and the ancient earthworks at Waddon Hill Roman Fort tell stories of Roman occupation. West Bay, Bridport's harbour town just two miles south, draws crowds for its dramatic golden cliffs and pebble beach - though the harbour itself can feel a bit chaotic during summer weekends. The coast path from here leads to some of Dorset's finest cliff-top walking, including the climb to Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast.

Reaching Bridport requires a bit of planning since the railway closed decades ago. Dorchester, about 20 minutes by car to the east, offers the nearest rail connections to London. The A35 provides the main road link, winding through some lovely Dorset countryside but adding time to any journey.

Staying at one of the local holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring both the town's working character and the spectacular Jurassic Coast. You're well positioned for day trips to Lyme Regis, Abbotsbury, and the fossil-rich beaches around Charmouth, while having easy access to Bridport's proper pubs and weekly markets.
