Alresford

The Watercress Line's steam engines still chuff through here, filling the air with coal smoke and childhood wonder. Alresford sits in the heart of Hampshire's chalk downland, where the River Arle bubbles through water meadows and Georgian brick houses line Broad Street like a period drama set.

This is proper countryside living. The town made its fortune from watercress - those crystal-clear chalk streams were perfect for growing the peppery leaves that ended up on Victorian breakfast tables across London. Today you can still see the old watercress beds, though most have been converted into trout farms.

West Meon War Memorial stands as a sobering reminder of the area's wartime history, while St. John's House offers glimpses into centuries past. The surrounding woodland is exceptional - Cheriton Wood and Old Park Wood provide cracking walks through ancient beech and oak, while smaller copses like Deershot and Joan's Acre Wood are perfect for shorter rambles.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Winchester lies just eight miles southwest, with regular bus connections along the A31. The real joy is taking the Watercress Line itself - the preserved steam railway that runs between Alresford and Alton.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're within easy reach of Winchester's cathedral and museums, yet surrounded by some of Hampshire's most unspoilt countryside. The chalk downland here is riddled with footpaths, and those ancient woods like Mantles Wood and Ropley Wood are right on your doorstep. It's an ideal spot for exploring the South Downs without the crowds.
