Bramdean Common

Bramdean Common is a proper woodland walk just outside Alresford, the sort of place locals know about and tourists often miss. You're looking at mixed forest with decent paths running through it - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant if you want to stretch your legs without heading into the South Downs proper.

The common itself is fairly open in places, which means you get decent light filtering through rather than that claustrophobic dark-wood feeling some forests give you. There are a few established routes, and the ground stays reasonably dry even after rain, though it can get a bit muddy near the stream. An hour is enough if you're just after a quick walk; two hours if you want to potter about properly.

It works well for families with kids who are past the toddler stage - old enough to walk at least a mile without complaining. Dogs love it, obviously. If you're into woodland birds or fungi, bring a notebook; it's the sort of quiet spot where you might actually see something worth identifying.

Stay at Woodlands Camping just 0.2 miles away and you've basically got this on your doorstep. Hampshire Hills and The Spinney are both within three-ish miles if you want slightly more facilities. The common pairs nicely with Alresford's Watercress Line railway if the weather turns - or just as an alternative to yet another riverside pub crawl.
