Yr Pwllgolaulas Farn

Scrambling up this modest Welsh peak north of Porthmadog rewards you with proper views across the Traeth Mawr estuary and out to Cardigan Bay. The summit sits at just over 200 metres, making it an achievable target for most walkers without the leg-burning slog of Snowdon's bigger brothers. From the top, you'll spot the distinctive outline of Criccieth Castle perched on its rocky outcrop to the southwest, while the Moelwyn range fills the northern horizon.

Walkers looking for a half-day adventure will find this fits the bill perfectly. The ascent takes about an hour from the nearest parking spots, though finding the exact start point can be a bit of a puzzle without proper OS mapping. Families with older children who fancy something more substantial than a beach walk should cope fine, but toddlers will struggle with the rougher terrain near the summit.

This makes a cracking addition to a holiday based around Porthmadog's cluster of caravan parks. After a morning on the peak, you're well placed for an afternoon at Black Rock Sands or a trip on the Ffestiniog Railway. The mountain doesn't see the crowds that flock to Snowdonia's headline acts, so you'll likely have the views largely to yourself.
