Ynys Cerrig-Duon

Standing 584 metres above the Snowdonia landscape, this rocky outcrop delivers views that'll make your legs forgive the climb. Ynys Cerrig-Duon translates as 'Island of Black Stones' - a fitting name for the dark, craggy summit that rises dramatically from the surrounding moorland near Porthmadog.

Walkers with proper boots and navigation skills will find the most reward here. The route isn't waymarked, so it's definitely one for confident hikers rather than casual weekend ramblers. Families with young children might struggle with the terrain and pathfinding required.

From the top, the Moelwyn range spreads out magnificently, with glimpses of the coast on clear days. It's a proper Welsh mountain experience without the crowds that flock to Snowdon - you'll likely have the summit to yourself. Allow three to four hours for the round trip, and pick a day when the weather's settled. The descent can be tricky in wet conditions.

Haven Greenacres Holiday Park and the various camping spots near Black Rock Sands make decent bases for exploring this quieter corner of Snowdonia. Just don't expect facilities or marked paths - this is wild Wales at its most authentic.
