Y Glog

Standing at 1,923 feet above the Mawddach estuary, this rocky summit delivers one of Snowdonia's finest viewpoints without the crowds that plague Snowdon itself. The climb from Porthmadog takes about three hours return, following well-marked footpaths through ancient oak woodland before emerging onto open moorland dotted with weathered stone walls.

Serious walkers will appreciate the relatively quiet trails and the proper sense of achievement when you reach the top. The panoramic views stretch from Cadair Idris to the south, across to the Rhinogs, and north towards the main Snowdonia peaks - on a clear day, you can spot Snowdon's summit pyramid in the distance.

Families with older children who enjoy a decent hike will find this manageable, though the final ascent over loose rock requires a bit of scrambling. The weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers and waterproofs even on sunny days.

From the holiday parks around Porthmadog, including Tyddyn Llwyn and Haven Greenacres, it's an easy drive to the various starting points. The walk pairs well with a visit to the nearby Ffestiniog Railway, making for a proper Welsh mountain day out. Allow four to five hours total if you want to take your time and enjoy the views properly.
