Y Gadfa

You'll find Y Gadfa looming above Dolgellau, a proper fell that demands respect rather than coaxing you up with gentle switchbacks. The walk itself is no trivial stroll - it's steep, occasionally scrambled, and the path can get boggy in places, but the effort pays off with views across the Cader Idris range and down into the Mawddach valley that'll make your legs stop complaining halfway up.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. If you're after a casual amble, keep walking. But if you're the type who enjoys tackling something with a bit of teeth to it, Y Gadfa rewards you properly. Allow a solid two hours for the ascent depending on fitness, then another 90 minutes back down. Wear proper boots and check the weather first - cloud can roll in fast here.

Families with younger children will struggle, though confident teenage walkers might fancy the challenge. History enthusiasts won't find much beyond the landscape itself, but that landscape tells its own story if you know where to look.
