Wyke Wood

The woodland around Wyke Wood offers a proper escape from the Dorset coast, just a short drive inland from Weymouth. You're walking through mixed deciduous forest - oak, beech, and ash mostly - with decent paths that fork off in various directions depending on how ambitious you're feeling. The canopy's thick enough that even on a hot day it stays cool, which is exactly what you need after an hour on the beach at Chesil.

It's best suited to families with kids old enough to handle uneven ground without constant complaints, and serious walkers who actually want to use their legs rather than just potter about. Give yourself an hour minimum, longer if you wander without direction. The terrain isn't brutal but it's not flat either - proper woodland, not a manicured park.

Being close to Chesil Beach Lodge Park and Haven Littlesea, it slots in nicely as a morning walk before heading back to the caravan for lunch. The contrast is welcome too - swap the shingle and sunburn for shade and birdsong. There's something grounding about getting off the holiday park and into proper forest, especially when the coast gets rammed with day-trippers.

Access appears to be free, though signage isn't exactly prominent. Bring decent shoes, not flip-flops, and don't expect facilities - this is genuine woodland, not a visitor centre experience. Rain makes the paths muddy but walkable. Worth the detour if you've got time to kill between beach days.
