Whitmoor Coppice

A dense woodland block just outside Weymouth, Whitmoor Coppice is the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's proper woodland - the kind with actual trees overhead, dappled light, and the smell of earth and leaf rot. You're walking through mixed broadleaf forest here, nothing manicured, which makes it feel wilder than it probably is.

The main draw is simply a decent walk away from the coast. If you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby - Chesil Beach Lodge is the best rated and only a short drive away - this offers a complete tonal shift from the beach. It's quiet. You won't find play equipment or visitor facilities. There's no car park to speak of either, which keeps the numbers down.

Allows a solid hour or two depending on how far you want to push into it. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes - there's no obvious destination, just paths through trees. Walkers and people who actually like forests will appreciate the lack of tourist infrastructure. Bring proper footwear; it gets muddy.

Free to access. Go when it's actually dry - after rain it becomes proper bog. Early morning or late afternoon feels less exposed to whatever weather's coming in off the Channel. It's a useful antidote to a week of seaside camps, not a main event. Think of it as a valuable breathing space rather than a destination in itself.
