Wreck of the Helvetia

The Helvetia ran aground on Oxwich Bay in 1887, and what's left of her - a few ribs of iron and scattered metalwork - still pokes through the sand when the tide's out. It's not exactly a dramatic shipwreck scene like you might imagine; more a haunting reminder that things end up on beaches for reasons that weren't kind.

You'll find the wreck near Oxwich, just along the Gower coast from Swansea, and the best time to hunt for it is at low tide when the remains are properly exposed.
