Rhossili Bay Swansea

Three miles of golden sand backed by towering cliffs - Rhossili Bay is one of those rare British beaches that actually lives up to the hype. The moment you crest the dunes from the car park, you understand why it keeps showing up on lists of the UK's best. The beach curves in a perfect arc from Rhossili Head down to Burry Holms, and on a clear day the light hits it so that the sand seems to glow.

It's best for walkers and families who don't mind a bit of space - even in summer, the sheer scale of the place means it never feels rammed. The rock pools at the southern end are excellent for kids, while the cliffs are dramatic enough to satisfy anyone who just wants to stand around looking brooding. On windy days, you'll spot kite surfers making the most of it.

Allow two hours minimum if you're doing the full walk to Burry Holms where the ruins of a medieval monastery sit isolated on the headland. Bring a good breakfast - the cafe facilities are limited. The best light is early morning or late afternoon, and frankly, avoid bank holidays if you can.

Stay at Hillend Camping Park just under a mile away, or push further to Gower Farm Touring & Camping Park for more space. Either puts you perfectly positioned for an early morning beach session before the crowds arrive. Worth the drive down the Gower Peninsula from Swansea - absolutely.
