Rhossili Beach

Three miles of golden sand backed by high cliffs - that's Rhossili Beach, and it's genuinely one of South Wales' best stretches of coast. The bay curves in a perfect arc from Rhossili Head to Burry Holms, a tidal island you can walk out to when the sea's low enough. The light here changes constantly, which sounds like holiday brochure nonsense until you're actually standing there watching it happen.

It's a proper working beach. Surfers come for the Atlantic swells, families spread out with buckets and spades, and walkers tackle the clifftop path that runs the entire length. The Gower Peninsula location means you get dramatic geology - those cliffs aren't just for show, they're the real deal. Low tide reveals vast stretches of firm sand perfect for long walks. High tide? Pack the car with water and snacks because you're settling in for the day.

Walkers will find themselves coming back. The ridge walk from the car park takes about an hour and gives proper views across the Bristol Channel. Kids won't get bored - there's rock pooling, exploring the remains of the Helvetia shipwreck if tides cooperate, and enough sand for hours of building and running about.

Camping nearby is straightforward. Hillend Camping Park sits just 1.1 miles away, with Pitton Cross and Broughton Farm also close by if you want to base yourself here. Summer weekends get rammed with day-trippers from Swansea, so go early or come in shoulder season when the beach feels properly yours. It's free to access and open year-round, though winter storms can be dramatic enough to keep you watching rather than swimming.
