Helvetia

Standing on the rocks at Pwll Du Head, you can still make out the skeletal remains of Helvetia - a merchant steamship that met her end here in 1887. The wreck sits in relatively shallow water just off the Gower coastline, her iron ribs now home to seaweed and barnacles rather than cargo.

This isn't your typical historic site visit - there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards. What you get is a proper coastal walk along dramatic cliffs followed by the sight of genuine Victorian maritime history slowly being claimed by the sea. Marine archaeology enthusiasts will find it fascinating, and it's a cracking spot for photographers when the light's right.

The walk from Southgate takes about 20 minutes each way along well-defined clifftop paths. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of scrambling will enjoy it, though the youngest might find the terrain challenging. Low tide offers the best views of the wreck's structure.

Being so close to multiple Gower holiday parks like Pitton Cross and Hillend Camping Park, it makes for an easy half-day excursion. Combine it with a visit to nearby Oxwich Bay for swimming, and you've got a proper day out exploring this stunning stretch of Welsh coast.
